Dear my friends , relatives,                                                                                          Dated: 01.10.2018

I have a lot of information, regarding Parayil family, to share with you. Many of the matters are difficult to share with you by talk, but easy to write here for your future reference. This will help you to understand the history of Parayil family.

My birth place is at Indippara near Thodupuzha in Idukki district (Kerala). My father is Late P V Cherian, S/o Varkey Parayil and mother is late Eley of Koottianikkal family of Nellappara, Thodupuzha.

Grand father (Pithamahan) was a Varkey and his father (also a Varkey- Prapithamahan) lived at Ambara in Edamatam (wife house Kachirayil family)  with seven issues, 4 sons and three daughters. The daughters were married to Naduvappurayidath and Vettiyeppurath families. Two of his sons were adopted by two families (Dattu nilkal ) ,viz, Kappalumakkal and Kinattukara families,

Grand father Varkey's brother got lion's share of property (11 acres land) and settllled  at Ambara itself and Varkey (My grand father) settled at Indippara with two sons- my father Cherian and his elder brother Varkey-  and parents and grand mother (Thabalakkat family of Palappilly) at Indippara. In the team of migration Varkey had a daughter of two years old. On the way she died at a place called Vilakkumadam close to a temple. She was cremated with the help of local people. It was reported by the local people that the child was killed by ' Yakshi' as a black marking on the body was seen like' poonool ' immediately after her death.

Grandfather Varkey purchased 3 acres  land at Odukkushy near Karimkunnam. Pepper was the main crop and within 2 years he purchased another 2 acres land at a place called Idapramkunnu by the earnings from the pepper cultivation. The elder son, ie, brother of my father Varkey (pet name Appi) settled at Idapramkunnu after marriage and my father Cherian (pet name Kunhappan) stayed Odukkushy.

My Father migrated with 4 children Valsamma, Simon, Joseph and Gracy) to Malabar and settled down at a place called Vembua in Eruvessy village in the year 1962. Late Varkey,( elder brother of my father) and his family was also with the migration. (My Brothers George and Augustine stayed with Ouseph alias Joseph at Karimkunnam - younger brother of my father- to complete their studies and later joined with us at Vembua.)

By this time my father Cherian managed the marriage of the eldest two daughters. The eldest one Smt. Chinnamma was married to Sri. Josepb Poshnapillil of Ramapuram, Idukki district (Now settled at Nilambur with family) and the 2nd daughter Smt. Mariakutty married to Sri. Papachan Eruvelikunnel, Pizhaku, Idukki district. The 3rd daughter Miss Marykutty was very much particular to join with missionaries and joined with SMMI congregation. She has completed 25 years service in Papua New Guenea as missionary and her golden jubilee was celebrated on 21st May 2016 at the house of my brother late Joseph. Due to the two marriages and the joining of the 3rd daughter with the missionaries and consequent expenditure incurred in those connections,  he became financially unsafe. This led his migration to Malabar. My grant father Varkey advised my father to migrate to Malabar and acquire more land to sustain the children. He also advised his elder son Varkey to join with my father telling " he should not be alone".

On 15.02.1962 my father Cherian reached Vembua (near Payyavoor) with my mother and 4 children and stayed with his brother-in-law named Kutty alias Agusthy Kootianickal) for few days and shortly constructed a hut in his won property at Vembua and shifted the family. There was no basement for the building, walls were made of  tree twigs and roofing was with bamboo and thatched with Theruva pullu. A better house was later constructed with country bricks and Baliapatam tiles and shifted to that house on 13.03.1974. At Vembua he purchased 6.78 acres of dry land at two locations in survey number 25 of Eruvessy village (3.78 acres- earmarked for Augusty Kootiyanikkal my uncle- at Vembua near Vembua bridge and 3 acres at Pattathinkad). The whole area was actually forest like.

Cherian Parayil

Ely parayil
Cleared the area in a phased manner in three years and my mother was always behind my father in all the cultural operations in the field, after kitchen work. The main crops were tapioca, paddy, sweet potato, thuvara, Chama, coffee, etc. We consumed mainly tapioca and rice four times everyday. Vegetables like paval, venda, vellari, mathan, banana and even colocasia- both leaf and tuber- and papaya were the main items. At least one cow was always there with 1-4 goats providing milk.  We used river fish caught by choondal and nanju kalakkal and another unique technique was ' vellakkol attal' with two persons involved and valavirikkal. My father was very much particular to purchase 3-4 kilogrammes  red meat on every Sundays. so almost all main items of kitchen eatables were from our own farm- fresh and organic.

Father's asset was his health and hard working nature. He was trustee of Holy Cross Church Vembua at two spells and was a well known worker of Congress party. Mother was a person of love and affection and hard working. She guided all her children withproper advice, lesson of cleanliness and very famous for cooking tasty food. She used to do hard work in field after kitchen works. Due to the hard working nature of parents, there was no shortage of food for the children. His money management was a model and he used to write diary on a note book from 1950 onwards and the same is kept in my Almirah at present.

In 1962 when we reached here, there was no road to Vembua but only a kacha road used for bullock cart mainly the one owned by Thettayil Chettan of Chalimparamba. No radio, no news papers, and publications. Church and school was at Chemperi 5 km from home. Shops were available at Payyavoor 2 km from home. No hospitals other than one man operated 2 clinics owned by Dr. Rajan and another by Dr. Mohan at payyavoor. They were not qualified doctors.Films theatre was available at Chengalai 12 km from home. Father allowed me to see 2-3 cinema every year. I used to walk the whole distance of 24 km (to and fro) in the early days to see the cenema.

I got my primary education from Nirmala School Chemperi. I joined in the 1st STD in the year 1963 along with my brother Agustine-4th STD  and sister Valsamma- 2nd STD. My father had only one bad habit of smoking . He used to consume 2 packets of Sadhoo beedi- each packet containing 25 nos. This influenced me and I used to steal beedi from father's packets and smoke regularly. Hesitated to attend the classes especially in the forth standard and used to cut the class and sit in an  abandoned hospital at Chemperi on several days.along with friends. We used to play in the hospital, take lunch given from home and return to home along with other students who attended the classes. This led to failure in the IV STD. Father got information on all these and he shifted me to Payyavoor Sacred Heart School, This was a turning point in my life. Here I remember teachers like S/s Scaria, Punnachan, Jose Mulloor,Philip, Gopi, Marykutty ,Sr. Nuwara Elia, Kuruvilla, etc.( Sri. Kuruvilla later became my strong enemy and spoiled my life to a great extent in collaboration  with Sri. Thankachan Paisakary)

(I was never a problem maker in the class. I joined with a team to form a unit of KSU in the school in 1972 and attended a secret meeting in a cashew plantation. But the unit was not formed due to the protest and intimidation from school authorities. In the year 1972 there was an agitation throughout Kerala called 'college Samaram' with the leadership of Sri. A K Antony supported by Congress party. I supported the agitation and joined with strikes. The 'college samaram' was a great success in Kerala. College admission was declared as based on merit only. It was because of this rule only that I got admission in college.)

Thereafter I never failed in any class. I was above average in terms of marks in the class. Passed SSLC in the year 1973 in 1st class- 389 marks out of 600 and got prize from Payyavoor panchayath being top scorer in the Panchayath.

My teacher, Philip sir influenced me to join in college. The nearest college was at Taliparamba- Sir Syed College 35 km away from home at Vembua. By this time service bus stated from Chemperi to Taliparamba. This encouraged me to join in college as a day scholar. Father was not much happy to send me to college due to financial difficulties. However mother recommended me suitably and finally father agreed to.

Reached college in 1973 July and filled up the application form. with III(Indian history, World history and Civics and IV group (accountancy, book keeping) as my 1st and 2nd choices. The college lecturer of the college Sri. Madhavan sir of physics department advised me to apply for II and I group as choices. Reluctantly I corrected the choices and submitted the application.. On information from the college, appeared before the Principal Dr. Aboobecker for interview. He immediately declared me as selected for the II group the 1st choice and put the certificates in the tray and advised my father  to remit the fee of Rs.144/-. We had not enough money. So the principal gave permission to remit the cash next day. We were in a dilemma and another gentleman knowing the situation gave the required money and we remitted the cash. On the 1st working of the course PDC, the loan amount was paid by the cash given to me from home. My college admission was merely because of two factors. (1) The principal put my certificates into the tray. so the only option for my father was to remit the fee. (2) One person gave enough money to my father with which we remitted the fee on the day of interview.

During the 1st year of the course  PDC, I was a day scholar going to college by bus. I used to walk 3.5 km to catch bus at Chundakunnu (Chemperi- Taliparamba route) crossing a bamboo bridge, at Eruthukadav, of 100 metre in length. The daily journey to college started at 7 am and used to reach home by7- 8 pm, with candle light. There were only 3 buses running between Chemperi and Taliparamba- Ajantha, Ananthakrishna and HMT. The bus staff were not in good terms with the students as the concession rate was only 40 paise and on several days there were clashes with the conductors. So I determined to become a good bus conductor, after education, who would be in good relationship with students.

In the pre-degree course I passed with 1st class - 71.2 % marks- in 1975. Up to 1975, the selection for medicine was entirely based on marks obtained for the PDC. I was eligible for admission, but didn't applied due to financial problems. Actually I was unaware of the way of  applying for government job. My parents used to say that Govt. job was not for people like us, but for people like political leaders or wealthy people who can pay bribe or offer recommendations. So I never thought of studying for a job. Moreover there was nobody in my family with Govt. job. My father studied up to IV STD and mother only II STD.

After passing the PDC my aim was to get a job. My aim was to become a bus conductor. I went to  Kannur. I had information that the owner of NKBT bus as residing there. When I reached there, I inquired about the person, the owner of the bus.Nobody could help me at kannur. Hence returned to home. This was my 1st visit to district HQ. Also I tried to join with missionaries and contacted the then Vicar of St. Antony's Church Chundaparamba Fr. Abraham for recommendation. But my mother insisted that I should complete degree.

My mother compelled me to continue study and father was also happy that I passed the PDC with good results. So I applied for B Sc Botany in Sir syed College Taliparmba in 1975 and completed the course with 1st class in 1978. I am grateful to my teachers and remember S/s Vani Devi, Thankam, Kareem, Vijayan, Raveendran, Chindankutty, etc. A simple remembrance of my teachers will give me extra positive energy.

From II PDC onwards, ie, 1974, I stayed in Private lodge named Cosmos and Oasis. There I prepared my food using kerosine/diesel stove and many of the items like tapioca were brought from my home. Mother used to give me pickles in bottles. Still now I can remember and enjoy the taste of the pickles used there. I never joined with any strike in the college. Strike by KSU, SFI and MSF was common on those days. However the college was calm during the emergency period.

I had heard my parents, especially father, admiring teachers for their  valuable works in modelling the students. This had set my mind to become a teacher. My parents also encouraged me to get admission in B Ed college. I got admission in Ramakrishna institute of Moral and spiritual Education Mysore in 1979. At the same time I had applied for the same course at Govt. Brennan Training College Thalassery also. I was admitted at this college also. So I preferred the 2nd college and studied there upto January 1980 and completed the teaching practice at BEMP School Tellicherry.

By this time I had applied for 4 posts. One in ESI Corporation, 2nd LDC post in PSC and 3rd in Rubber Board as Jr. Field Officer and 4. NMGB.. There was no response from ESI Corporation, In NMGB, I appeared for the written test and later for  interview. at Kannur. The mode of conduct of the interview itself was clear that they had already selected the persons required. So before the interview board itself I said that I had no faith in the interview and returned to home.

In January 1980 I got appointment as LDC in Employment exchange Kasargod. But in July 1980 itself I got appointment as Jr. Field Officer in Rubber Board. My entire history in Rubber Board is given in another post named 'my history in Rubber Board'.
